Pro-Biafra agitators planning to kidnap Kanu from court premises – DSS alleges

The Department of State Service, DSS, on Monday informed an Abuja Federal High Court that some pro-Biafra agitators were plotting to invade the court premises and forcefully rescue the detained leader of the Indigenous Peopleof Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

The prosecution led by Mohammed Diri while informing the Justice John Tsoho led court said the agency had already commenced investigation into the alleged invasion.

The DSS disclosed this discovery following the expected commencement of Kanu’s case today.Kanu alongside two others, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi are standing trial on a six-count treason charge.

Earlier, the prosecution had prayed the court to adjourn the matter till when its witnesses will be granted the needed protection so as to testify before thecourt.

Diri informed the court that the witnesses insisted they will only testify against Kanu if they are allowed to wear mask or their identities shielded from both lawyers and the public.

He said, “My lord this is because they are already receiving threats from associates of the defendants that they will be dealt with. The witnesses said they love their lives and requested that their identities be shielded from people who are coming to witness the proceeding”.

The defence counsel, Chuks Mouma, however, opposed the prayer of the prosecution, saying the court should not allow ‘masquerades’ to testify before it.

In view of this, Mouma prayed the court to discharged and acquit his client of all charges.

After listening to arguments of both counsel, Justice Tsoho adjourned the matter till March 9.
